The Mardyke Series was officially launched in the Mardyke Arena UCC, Cork this week with the help of Irish internationals Grainne Dwyer and Edel Thornton. The Series will see Ireland welcome Iceland for a two-game series in early June which kicks off on Friday evening, June 9th, with the sides going head-to-head at the Mardyke Arena UCC at 7.30pm. This will be followed by the second game of the series on Saturday, June 10th, when the teams will face each other once more, this time at 5pm at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
Speaking ahead of the games, Head Coach Mark Scannell stated: “We had some very tough games in Luxembourg back in May and we learned a lot of lessons that weekend. Now we’re really looking forward to the Mardyke Series. Training has been going well and the girls have been working hard and we’re all excited about getting back on the court for some vital game time. Iceland will be tough opposition and we will need to be at our best to get the win. We hope that everyone will come down and support the team for the Mardyke Series over the two days and look forward to showcasing Irish basketball on our home courts here in Ireland once more.”
Also speaking ahead of the Mardyke Series, the Mardyke Arena UCC General Manager, Mr Patsy Ryan stated: ”We are delighted to be associated with this series and wish the Irish Women’s team every success over the two games. We are committed to supporting Basketball Ireland and in particular, the management and players affiliated to the Irish Senior Women’s team.”
